SpaceX reached new heights, so to speak, this week by placing a telecommunications satellite into orbit nearly 50,000 miles above the Earth. That is about a quarter of the distance between the to the Moon.
This launch places the private company into a positive position when competing for additional launch contracts from private firms and government agencies. A smaller version of this rocket has already won SpaceX a contract with NASA for re-supply mission to the International Space Station.
SpaceX was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk with the stated goal of revolutionizing space technology and enabling people to live on other planets. This is the type of entrepreneurship that built America (Elon Musk is actually a native of South Africa) and the type of work that will build the economy and create jobs. Kudos to the whole SpaceX team.
